The Ensems festival, a long-standing Valencian event, marks its 48th edition with a packed programme from September 17 to 27, 2026.
Worth knowing what you're buying. "Contemporary music" here doesn't mean current pop: it means concert music written in recent decades for acoustic instruments, live electronics, or both at once. Expect pieces premiered that night and setups you never see in a normal orchestral season.
First time at this kind of concert
You don't need training, you need patience with unfamiliar sound. Arrive early enough to read the programme notes — they usually explain each piece better than any review. Applause comes at the end of a work, not between sections, and nobody dresses up. The listed price is 25 €, but a festival with many sessions normally prices per concert, so confirm the time, the hall and the fee for your specific night on the official page.
Les Arts: getting there
The Palau de les Arts stands at the far end of the Turia riverbed park, on Avenida del Professor López Piñero. Metro line 10 stops beside the complex and reaches the centre in minutes; by bike the riverbed gets you there from almost any neighbourhood without crossing serious traffic. Driving means the paid car park under the complex — see where to park in València.
Before the concert
September evenings are still shirt-sleeve warm, so come an hour early and walk the site: the Umbracle is free to walk through and the Science Museum is next door. Note that dinner runs late here — kitchens around the complex fill after 21:00, which suits a concert night better than you'd expect. Transport detail in getting around València.
