Exhibition on the transformations of the Holy Chalice in València

The exhibition is held in the Cathedral Museum on Plaça de l'Almoina and runs until 28 October. The approach is unusual for a relic: rather than one more display case, it puts eighteen replicas on show, reconstructing what the cup looked like before the later mountings and additions were fitted. In practice it is an exhibition about how a single object has been altered over centuries.

The detail the organisers highlight is optical — the piece shifts tone depending on how the light strikes it. The replicas let you see that at close range, which the original, still in its own chapel inside the cathedral, does not allow.

Opening times are not given either. Worth knowing generally: many sites in the old town close in the middle of the day and reopen in the late afternoon, so do not assume a continuous schedule.

Getting there, and when to go

Plaça de l'Almoina sits directly behind the cathedral, inside the pedestrian and restricted-traffic zone. There is no convenient way to arrive by car; walk from anywhere in Ciutat Vella, or cycle. In August the first hour after opening is the one to aim for: fewer people, and the square still in shade.

Filling the morning

Directly under the same square is the Almoina archaeological museum, where you look down on the Roman and Visigothic city through a glass floor. Opposite, you can climb the Micalet bell tower, and the basilica of the Virgin is two minutes away. For lunch nearby, the Mercat Central is a short walk.
