Chelva Patronal Festivities
The Patronal Festivities in Chelva take place during the second half of August, blending popular fervor, culture, and entertainment.
These festivities open the way many Valencian patronal fiestas do: with a romería, a walking procession carrying the Virgen del Remedio from her hermitage to the village church. From then on the programme alternates religious ceremonies with events in the streets, and the night verbenas — open-air dances with a live band, running until very late — are what draws the crowds. The day-by-day schedule is published in the official programme, and it is worth checking: over a week of fiesta, not every day carries the same weight.
The listing gives no price. Street events at a patronal fiesta are open to whoever walks past; for specific ticketed acts, check the official information.
Getting to Chelva without a car
Chelva is about 70 km inland from València and is the main town of the Serranos county. There is a direct bus from València's main bus station, with only a couple of departures a day and a journey of roughly an hour and a half. The catch is the return: verbenas finish at dawn and nothing runs back at that hour, so either stay overnight or drive. Villages with better connections are listed in reaching the villages without a car.
What to do in Chelva during the day
The old town still shows its division into Moorish, Jewish and Christian quarters, and it is small enough to walk. The best-known walk is the Ruta del Agua, a waterside route along the river Tuéjar that starts in the village and passes through tunnels and old irrigation channels. In August do it early, with water and shoes you do not mind getting wet. Also remember that inland villages close for several hours in the middle of the day and shops may not reopen until 17:00 or later. For more of the same kind of landscape, Chulilla is in the same county, and there are more walks in hiking routes near València.
If you are coming for the fiesta
August is patronal fiesta season across inland València and many overlap, so check the fiesta calendar and other day trips from València before fixing a weekend. In small villages, accommodation during fiesta week is booked out well in advance.
