Filmoteca d'Estiu: open-air summer cinema at the Palau de la Música gardens

Filmoteca d'Estiu is the summer programme of the Institut Valencià de Cultura, the regional film archive: open-air screenings in the gardens below the Palau de la Música, inside the old Turia riverbed. Films run in the original language with Spanish subtitles — worth knowing before you buy, because a non-English film will carry Spanish text, not English. Tickets are €4, online or at the box office, which opens at 21:30. The screening starts at 22:30. Which film is on any given night is set by the season's programme on the IVC site.

Getting there, and parking

The gardens sit at the foot of the Palau on the Passeig de l'Albereda, and you reach them by dropping down into the riverbed. The nearest metro is Alameda (lines 3 and 9), a little over ten minutes on foot, and several EMT bus routes stop on the Albereda itself. Cycling along the Turia gardens is easier than either, and the path is quiet at that hour. What an August night in the riverbed is like

This is a garden, not a cinema, and it behaves like one. The city is audible in the background, an August night down in the riverbed stays warm rather than cooling off, and there are mosquitoes — you are in greenery beside a park at exactly their hour. Repellent and water cover both. Arriving when the box office opens at 21:30 helps if you want a central seat, and leaves time to eat something around the Albereda first, which fits the local timetable anyway: dinner here starts at 21:00, not 19:00.

Before and after, along the riverbed

The Turia gardens run the width of the city and the Palau sits roughly halfway along. Walk upstream and you reach the Jardines de Viveros, València's big park; downstream you come to the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, which looks better lit at night than it does at midday.
