Melanie Smith. Only One Thing Was Strange
"Melanie Smith. Only One Thing Was Strange (Solo una cosa era extraña; seguir pensando como antes)" is the solo exhibition that IVAM (Institut Valencià d'Art Modern) devotes to the British artist, long based in Mexico City, as part of its 2026 programme. Working across painting, drawing, video and sculpture, Smith focuses on two endangered species — the Mexican axolotl and the purple sea snail — engaging with these living forms without producing deterministic representations. The show offers a reflection on shifting perceptions in a changing world and forms part of IVAM's "Amphibious Museum" line, which blends contemporary art, traditional knowledge, ethnographic research and environmental action. The exhibition opens to the public on 24 September 2026 at IVAM (Carrer de Guillem de Castro 118, València).
