Misteri d'Elx 2026 (Elche Mystery Play)
The Misteri d'Elx is a sacred lyric drama of medieval origin performed entirely in Valencian each August inside the Basílica de Santa María in Elche to honour the Virgin of the Assumption; it was declared a National Monument in 1931 and proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The work is staged in two acts: 'La Vespra', performed on 14 August at 18:00, which depicts the death and dormition of the Virgin Mary, and 'La Festa', on 15 August at the same time, with her assumption and coronation as Queen of Heaven. During 'La Vespra' the image of the Virgin processes through the church accompanied by the Marys and angels (played by boy singers), an angel descends in the 'Magrana' (Pomegranate) to announce her death and present her with a golden palm, and finally the 'Araceli' descends from the painted heaven of the crossing to carry her soul aloft. The entire performance is sung a cappella, without instruments, using the spectacular aerial stage machinery (tramoya) that recreates heaven beneath the basilica's dome. Admission to the church is free on both days, though because of the huge crowds visitors are advised to arrive several hours early; tickets for the August representations go on sale in June through the Patronat del Misteri d'Elx ticketing platform.
