Moors & Christians of la Vila Joiosa (The Landing)
The Moors and Christians Festival of la Vila Joiosa, held in honour of its patron saint Santa Marta, is declared of International Tourist Interest and takes place every year from 24 to 31 July. It commemorates the Barbary pirate attack of 1538, when the town successfully defended itself against the invading fleet under the protection of Santa Marta. The most spectacular act is El Desembarco (The Landing), which takes place in the early hours of 28 July on the Playa Centre beach: Moorish troops disembark from their boats and wage a battle of arquebus fire, flames, lights and music against the Christian side right on the sand, ending in the final Christian victory. Throughout the week, the Moorish and Christian companies, organised by the Asociación de Moros y Cristianos Santa Marta, lead colourful Entradas (parades) through the old town, theatrical embassies (embajadas), religious acts in honour of Santa Marta, and cultural activities. The festival unfolds in the streets and on the beach, and events held in public spaces are free to attend (some grandstands and reserved seats may require a ticket).
