9 October is the Day of the Valencian Community, the regional holiday marking King Jaume I's entry into València in 1238. The main ceremony happens in the city, but the whole region has the day off.

What it is

The date marks the Christian conquest of the city and, by extension, the day of the Valencians. The morning revolves around the Senyera, the flag with the blue stripe: it is lowered from the Town Hall balcony without touching the ground and carried in a civic procession to the monument to Jaume I at the Parterre, where a floral tribute is left.

A bit of history

Honouring Jaume I goes back centuries, when the city's standard was brought out every 9 October. Alongside the official ceremony, the Mocadorà survives: a person gives their partner marzipan sweets (the piuleta and the tronador among them) wrapped in a silk handkerchief. It is the Valencian Valentine's Day.

What to see and do

The Senyera's route runs along Calle de la Paz and the Glorieta area. There is a mascletà, plus dolçaina and tabal players in the streets, and bakeries fill their windows with marzipan that week.
