Cima del casco de Culla

Templar and later Montesa fortress above the village, with wall stretches. Views over the Maestrazgo ridges.

Open in Google Maps

Culla Castle and walls crown the village, in the Alto Maestrazgo. It was a Templar fortress and later held by the Order of Montesa, and its walls ring the upper quarter beside the Salvador church.

History

The castle guarded the Maestrazgo crossroads and the local commandery. In the early modern period it lost its military role and its stones went into village houses, but the enclosure and walls remain legible.

What to see

Walk the upper enclosure and the wall stretches, with views over the Maestrazgo ridges. The visit is free and pairs with the stroll through the medieval core.
