What to see in Denia
Denia sits about 82 km from Valencia between the Montgó and the sea. The castle on the hill houses the town archaeology museum with Iberian, Roman Dianium and Islamic finds, and its ramparts look over the port and the mountain. Below, the Asunción church (18th century) faces the Plaza de la Constitución with its tiled dome, and the Ethnology Museum in a 19th-century house covers fishing and the pasa raisin trade.
Outside the core, the 16th-century Torre del Gerro stands on the Les Rotes cliffs, the 17th-century dry-stone Caseta del Pare Pere recalls friar Pere Esteve in the Montgó foothills, and the 15th-century Santa Lucía hermitage starts countryside walks. The town, named UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015, flies the flag for red shrimp, Bous a la Mar and the Baix la Mar fishermen quarter.
One full day works: historic core of castle, church and ethnology museum in the morning, Les Rotes cliffs or Montgó foothill paths in the afternoon. The town also celebrates Bous a la Mar, Moros y Cristianos and Fallas beside its maritime festivals.
