A circular 14 km hike, hard difficulty, with about 800 m of total ascent over thousands of stone steps. Locals call it «the Cathedral of Hiking» and, by its nickname, los 8.000 graons (the 8,000 steps). No technical scrambling, but it's a long day: plan on 5 to 7 hours.

The route

It starts in Fleix, in La Vall de Laguar. The path drops at once towards the bottom of the gorge down a stairway cut by hand by the Moriscos centuries ago. At the bottom you cross the riverbed, dry most of the year, then climb the far side up another equally long flight. The middle section links with the Font de Reinós area, and the way back keeps trading descents for climbs. You finish where you began.

What you'll see

The draw is the canyon: vertical walls, dry-stone terraces among the pines and natural viewpoints over the Marina Alta. There are springs to refill water. In spring it smells of thyme and rosemary.
