Cumbre del Montgó (PR-CV 355)
The classic climb to the summit of Montgó (753 m), the limestone giant that watches over Xàbia and Dénia from the sea. A demanding ascent up stony paths to a final ridge where you'll need your hands, rewarded with a dizzying panorama over the whole Marina Alta.
753 metres above the sea, and you climb almost all of them in one go. The Montgó summit is the classic Marina Alta hike: an 8.6 km out-and-back rated hard, with about 612 m of ascent and 4–5 hours on the trail up the Xàbia side, over limestone.
The route
It starts easy among pines and scrub, but the path soon turns rocky and steep. The final stretch is what everyone remembers: a ridge where you put your hands on the rock and scramble a little. It isn't technical climbing, but it does need proper footwear. At the top the view opens toward Cap de Sant Antoni, Dénia and, on clear days, the outline of Ibiza.
Tips
- Carry 1.5–2 litres of water: there are no fountains on the way up.
- Hiking shoes with good grip; flip-flops won't do here.
- In summer start early and check the weather: the rock throws back the heat and fog on the summit wipes out the views.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to climb Montgó?
Between 4 and 5 hours round trip, depending on pace and stops. The descent over the rocky section also takes time.
Is it suitable for kids or beginners?
It's not the best first hike: the final scrambling ridge makes it demanding. To get started, look at gentler routes or the guide to hiking near València.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn, and always early. Pair it with a visit to Xàbia and its coves.
