Serra — Serra Calderona

Distance: 30 km

Duration: 8–9 h

A demanding circular trek that sets off from the Porta-Coeli charterhouse and climbs through the heart of the Serra Calderona to the Pic de l'Àguila (878 m), the range's most spectacular lookout. From the summit a full 360° panorama unfolds over the northern wall of the Calderona, the Palancia valley and the distant Sierra de Espadán — a fitting reward for a long day of pine woods, old farmsteads and mountain paths.

A circular trek of around 30 km, graded hard: 8–9 hours and close to 1,300 m of total ascent, from the Porta-Coeli charterhouse up to Pic de l'Àguila at 878 m.

The route

You set off beside the charterhouse, in Serra, gaining height through pine woods and old farm tracks. What matters isn't the distance but the 1,300 m of climbing across several steep pulls. The final push is short but sharp; from the top you see the north face of the Calderona, the Palancia valley and, on clear days, the Serra d'Espadà.

What you'll see

The red rodeno sandstone of the range stains the ground and the rocks. You pass abandoned farmhouses and terraces, springs and Mediterranean pine forest.
