Misteri d'Elx (Elche Mystery Play)
The Misteri d'Elx (Mystery Play of Elche) is a medieval sacred music-drama that stages the Dormition, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary, regarded as a cultural treasure of the people of Elche and one of the jewels of Valencian heritage. Declared a National Monument in 1931, it was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The performance unfolds over two days inside the Basilica of Santa María: La Vespra (the first part) on 14 August and La Festa (the second part) on 15 August, featuring spectacular aerial stage machinery such as the Magrana, the Araceli and the Coronation that descend from the church dome. Before the official performances, full dress rehearsals presenting both acts consecutively take place on 11, 12 and 13 August. Tickets are managed through El Corte Inglés' ticketing platform.
