Basílica de Santa María

In Alacant's old town stands the Basílica de Santa María, the city's oldest church. It was built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the remains of a former mosque, so the building layers several centuries of history: a sober Gothic interior crowned by a Baroque façade. Entry is free, worth a stop if you're walking through the historic quarter.

History

The church was built during the closing centuries of the Middle Ages and the start of the early modern period, on the plot where the main mosque once stood. This layering of religious uses is common across many towns of the former Kingdom of Valencia, and it explains why the building blends elements from different eras, with Gothic as the dominant style of its structure.
