La Tomatina de Buñol

The world's biggest tomato fight, in which more than 20,000 people throw some 120,000 kilos of tomatoes through the streets of Buñol for one hour. It is a Festival of International Tourist Interest and requires a paid ticket; places sell out fast.

120,000 kilos of ripe tomatoes and more than 20,000 people: La Tomatina in Buñol is the world's biggest tomato fight. It runs on the last Wednesday of August, from 11am to 1pm, about 40 km from València. It is a Festival of International Tourist Interest and, unlike almost all Valencian fiestas, needs a paid ticket.

How it works

It began in 1945, when young people at a parade of giant figures ended up throwing vegetables from a nearby stall; since 2013 the area is ticketed. The start signal is the «palo jabón», a soaped pole with a ham on top: when someone reaches it, the trucks tip out the tomatoes, which you squash before throwing. At 1pm a second shot ends it and the hoses come out. Wear clothes and shoes you can throw away, plus swimming goggles if the acid stings.
