The Castle of Ademuz crowns the hill above the Turia, in Ademuz. It is a ruined fortress and the origin of the walled enclosure of the town, capital of the Rincón de Ademuz, the Valencian exclave between Cuenca and Teruel.
History
The castle shaped the town: the wall that closed the village started from its enclosure. Over time it lost its defensive role and fell into ruin, but its outline still marks the profile of the village above the river.
What to see
You walk among the remains of walls around the hilltop, with views of the Turia and the riverside orchards. Next to the castle stand the ruins of the Santa Bárbara chapel, linked to the local Santa Cruz rites. Below, at the entrance to the village, waits the Huerta chapel, from the 14th century.
