Castillo del Río
Medieval castle by the Vinalopó, one of the three on the Aspe coat of arms. A rural fortress in the river's natural corridor.
By the Vinalopó riverbed, in the district of Aspe, stand the remains of the Castillo del Río. It is the second of the three fortresses on the municipal coat of arms and the one most tied to the natural corridor the river cuts between the ranges.
History
As a medieval fortress, the castle watched the passage through the Vinalopó valley, a historic communication route between the inland plateau and the coast. The site has yielded finds now studied in provincial museums.
What to see
The ruined enclosure keeps walls and foundations on a hill near the river. The Vinalopó riverside setting frames the visit and explains the fortress's strategic position.
