Palacio de Altamira
Fortified palace next to the basilica, home of the town archaeology museum, with Muslim wall remains at its base.
Next to the basilica in Elche stands the Altamira Palace, a fortified palace now housing the town archaeology and history museum. Remains of the Muslim town wall survive at its base.
History
The palace went up against the Islamic walled enclosure and was adapted over the centuries as a noble residence. Its recovery as a museum gathered Elche archaeology under one roof, from La Alcudia to the medieval town.
What to see
The museum covers local history with pieces from La Alcudia, the Islamic period and the Christian town. The building itself, with its fortified fabric and wall remains, is part of the visit.
Tips for your visit
- It stands wall to wall with the Santa María basilica; visit both one after the other.
- Round off the day at La Alcudia, source of many of the pieces.
