Cementerio del Castillo

Viewpoint

Guadalest — Marina Baixa (Alacant)

Price: Included in the castle ticket (€4)

A small, unusual cemetery set at the very top of the crag, beside the keep and walls of the Castillo de San José. From its terraces, at almost 600 m, you take in the whole valley, the Aitana range and the turquoise reservoir — one of the most spectacularly sited graveyards in the area. The few-minute visit is made on the way up to the castle.

At almost 600 metres up, beside the keep and walls of the Castillo de San José, lies one of the least expected viewpoints in Guadalest: the Cementerio del Castillo.

A graveyard with a view

It is small and very unusual, perched at the very top of the crag. From its terraces you look out over the whole valley, the Aitana range and the turquoise water of the reservoir. Few cemeteries have a setting like this.

When to see it

The visit takes only a few minutes and happens naturally on the way up to the castle, since the two share the summit and are reached by the same path from the Casa Orduña. It is a good spot for the valley photo and for grasping why this crag was chosen to defend Guadalest. Come in mid-afternoon and the light falls straight onto the reservoir.
