Castillo del Puig (Cerro de Sant Jordi)

On the hill that overlooks El Puig stand the remains of the castle where Jaume I set up his base for the conquest of Valencia. The climb to the top of the rise puts you at the site of one of the decisive episodes in Valencian history, with the Mediterranean and the whole market-garden plain spread out below. Entry is free.

History

The site owes its importance to the Battle of El Puig in 1237, when King Jaume I secured this strategic point as a stepping stone toward taking the city of Valencia. From the hill, his troops could watch over the plain and the roads leading to the capital. Today the surviving traces of the medieval fortress are enough to picture the military role it once played.

What to see

Beside the castle remains, the small hermitage of Sant Jordi crowns the hilltop. What stays with you from the climb, though, is the view: a sweeping panorama over the orchards of l'Horta Nord and, in the distance, the blue line of the sea.

• Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for the views and photos.
