Ermita de Santa Ana

On the outskirts of Ontinyent, the Ermita de Santa Ana crowns a pine-covered hill that looks out over much of the valley. More than a simple chapel, it is both a viewpoint and a place of devotion dear to the town, where people climb up as much for faith as for the pleasure of a quiet walk among the pines.

History

The origins of this hermitage go back to the 15th century, and it still preserves part of its primitive fabric in the Chapel of Communion, which keeps the modest, recollected character typical of Valencian devotional buildings of that era. The complex grew over time, but that older core remains the heart of the sanctuary.

What to see

Inside, the faithful venerate the image of Saint Anne with the Christ Child's mother as a young girl, spinning, an endearing depiction that gives the place its name. The hermitage is also the sanctuary of the Santíssim Crist de l'Agonia, patron of the town, in whose honour the lively Moors and Christians festivities are held.
