Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa María

Built on the site of the former mosque, the Archpriest Church of Santa María is the great monument of Ontinyent and is listed as a site of cultural interest. It presides over the Plaça de Santa Maria, in the heart of the old town of El Poble Nou de Dalt, and brings together in a single building the transition from Gothic to Renaissance.

History and style

The church rises over the site of the former mosque, a common origin for many Valencian churches after the Christian reconquest. Its Gothic-Renaissance fabric reflects centuries of building and reform, eventually becoming the architectural landmark of the town and one of the most notable religious ensembles in the district.

What to see

• The Gothic vaults resting on slender spiral piers, a striking decorative solution.
• The magnificent early Valencian Renaissance doorway, one of the building's most valuable features.
• Works inside by Mariano Benlliure and the painter José Segrelles.
• The bell tower, which at more than 71 metres is the tallest in the whole Valencian Community and dominates the city skyline.
