Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir (Sant Esteve)

The Church of San Esteban Protomártir (Sant Esteve) is one of the six founding parishes that James I established after the conquest of 1238, one of those small old-town churches that tourism mostly walks past. It was built over a former mosque and keeps the feel of medieval València under a later Baroque reworking.

History and character

The early Gothic church was already standing by around 1276, with the layout typical of Valencian parishes: a single nave and chapels between buttresses. Centuries later it was remodelled in Baroque style, adding altarpieces, gilding and Valencian tilework worth stopping to look at. The interior is hushed and warmly lit, quite different from the bustle of the big basilicas nearby.

What to see

• The baptismal chapel, with the font where, by tradition, San Vicente Ferrer and San Luis Beltrán were baptised.
• The Baroque and Valencian altarpieces and tilework.
• The original Gothic nave, still visible beneath the later decoration.

Practical tips

Admission is free. The church sits on the small, quiet Plaça de Sant Esteve, close to the Cathedral and the Royal Church of San Juan del Hospital, so it fits easily into a walk through Ciutat Vella. It's an active parish, so it's best to visit outside Mass times.

An insider curiosity

INSIDER TIP: every 23 January, the anniversary of San Vicente Ferrer's baptism in 1350, the church brings out the Bultos de Sant Esteve: wooden and papier-mâché figures that recreate the baptism scene, a tradition that started in 1597 under Valencia's College of Notaries. Few locals know about it and almost no tourist has seen it.
