Iglesia de Santa María (Villena)
16th-century church over a former mosque, with a Baroque portal in the old town by the castle slope.
In the old town of Villena, by the castle slope, stands the Santa María church, a 16th-century church raised over a former mosque. Its Baroque portal marks the neighbourhood square.
History
The church was built in the 16th century over the earlier mosque, at the town's most prosperous moment after the 1525 title. The later Baroque portal renewed its image.
What to see
The Baroque portal and the 16th-century nave. The setting, between the old town and the castle slope, makes it a natural stop on the climb to the fortress, and the square outside is a quiet corner of the old town.
