Mascarell is a small walled village that belonged to the barony and marquisate of Nules. At the end of the 19th century it became a hamlet of Nules, and in 2022 it had 193 inhabitants according to the INE. From the historic complex, the medieval walled enclosure, the church and the town hall survive, and they still define the outline of the settlement. The village keeps a closed layout and a small scale, in keeping with its former condition as a fortified site. Walking through its streets shows how a small rural community protected by walls was organised in this part of the region.
