Muralles i Torre Vigía de Beniesma
Of the wall built between 1330 and 1340 under Peter IV to protect the town from piracy, only remains survive next to the church of Santa María Magdalena. On Beniesma beach, the submerged foundations of the watchtower still stand; it was built before the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609.
Of the wall raised between 1330 and 1340, during the reign of Peter IV, to defend against banditry and pirates, only a few remains can be seen today, next to the parish church of Santa María Magdalena. On Beniesma beach, in the maritime quarter of El Grao, the submerged foundations of the watchtower survive instead; it was built before the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. The vestiges are therefore divided between the historic centre and the coast, and in both cases they recall the defensive role the Moncofa shoreline played for centuries.
