Museu Valencià d'Etnologia (La Beneficència)

The Museu Valencià d'Etnologia (affectionately known as L'ETNO) tells you how people once lived in València: the huerta (market gardens), the wetlands, the city, the drylands and the mountains, the festivals and the popular memory of an entire land. This is no dusty cabinet of curiosities: it is a well-told story, with modern, sensory and award-winning displays.

History and building

The museum was founded in 1982 to collect, study and share Valencian popular culture. It shares a home with the Museu de Prehistòria in the La Beneficència building, a former charity house raised around 1841 to a design by Joaquín María Belda and restored as a cultural centre in 1995. Its neo-Byzantine chapel and courtyards are worth the visit on their own.

What to see

The permanent exhibition unfolds in three chapters: The lived town (Valencian towns between 1800 and 1940), Market gardens and marshes, and Drylands and mountains. You wander through farmhouses, markets, reed huts and vanished trades via everyday objects, sounds and reconstructions that drop you into daily life of the past. The temporary exhibitions change often and tend to cover ground you will not find in other city museums.

Getting there and practical tips

• It sits in the Carme district, a short walk from the Centre del Carme and the IVAM, handy if you want to string together a few cultural stops.
• Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Entry is usually free at weekends.

Insider tip

Sharing a roof with Prehistory is a bargain: one visit to La Beneficència gets you two museums and a historic building. Don't leave without peeking into the Beneficència chapel, a space many visitors never even find. If you're travelling with kids, the museum runs hands-on workshops for them.
