Jardí Botànic de la Universitat de València

The Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia is right in the city, a short walk from the Torres de Quart. Behind its walls are more than 4,500 cultivated species, historic greenhouses, a palm grove, a 19th-century cast-iron shade house and centuries-old trees that offer cool shade even in the height of August. It's a place to wander slowly, read on a bench or simply switch off from the bustle of the centre.

History and curiosities

Its roots go back to 1567, when it began as a "garden of simples": a plot of medicinal plants tied to the University's medical studies. For two centuries it moved around the city until, in 1802, it settled definitively at its current site, the former Huerto de Tramoyeres, just outside the old walls. After decades of neglect, the University fully restored it between 1987 and 2000.

What to see

• The wrought-iron shade house, dating from the 19th century.
• The greenhouses with tropical and carnivorous plants.
• The palm and cycad collection, especially extensive.
• The medicinal-plant corner, a nod to its origins as a scientific garden.

Practical tips

It sits very close to the historic centre and is a few minutes' walk from the market district or El Carmen. Entry is paid but inexpensive, and the university often offers free-access days or time slots, so it's worth checking before you go. Wear comfortable shoes, and if you're with children give them time to explore every corner.

Local secret: from May to October the garden hosts the Sons al Botànic series, acoustic concerts at sunset among the greenery, usually on Fridays.
