Parque del Oeste

The Parque del Oeste (also called Parque del Avión, or 'Aeroplane Park') sits right on Avenida del Cid and is one of Valencians' favourite gardens. It isn't a monumental or touristy park, it's a neighbourhood one: families, joggers and grandparents use it daily, coming to chat in the shade. The large central esplanade, designed as an auditorium, is ringed by paths, each lined with a different tree species, plus ponds and a rose garden.

History

It was built on a former Air Force barracks and opened in April 1995, finally giving the western neighbourhoods a big green space they lacked. Over the years it grew past 40,000 m², and its distinctly urban feel made it a local meeting point.

What to see and do

• The rose garden, in bloom through spring.
• The themed tree paths, each one a different species.
• Children's play areas, a skating rink, mini-golf and pétanque.
• The esplanade-auditorium, host to open-air concerts and events.

Practical tips

Entry is free. It's well served by metro (Avinguda del Cid stop, lines 3 and 5) and by bus. The roses are best between April and June; by late afternoon the esplanade fills with skaters and families.

CURIOSITY: the 'Aeroplane Park' nickname comes from its military aviation past, and for years a real aircraft on display recalled that origin.
