What to see in Algemesí
Algemesí, about 31 km from València in the Ribera Alta, lives between the Magro farmland and its great festival. With some 28,000 residents (2025), it is a farming town on the right bank of the river that turns every 7 and 8 September into the stage of the Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut, listed by UNESCO since 2011.
The visit starts at the basilica of San Jaime (1550-1582), with the Ribalta high altarpiece of 1603-1610 and a pillar-less tower, and continues at the Museu Valencià de la Festa, opened in 2002 in the 1590 Sant Vicent convent to tell the festival story. The Troballa chapel recalls the finding of the image in 1247, the root of the devotion.
The plan fits a morning: basilica and museum stand minutes apart on foot, and the convent quarter keeps the mood of the festival town. If you come in festival week, allow time: Algemesí fills up.
The visit needs an unhurried morning, with a stop on the main square.
