Cocentaina, capital of El Comtat about 81 km from Valencia, counts 11,498 residents. The 13th-century Palacio Condal, residence of Roger de Lauria, and the Gothic castle with its 13.5-metre tower form the town's noble core.

The Santa María church, originating in the 13th century with a 1705 bell tower, completes the centre alongside the rural Penella castle, in rammed earth. In August the festival honours Sant Hipòlit with Moors and Christians.

In August, the Moors and Christians festival honours Sant Hipòlit and fills the town with companies and music for several days. The Salvador church, in the Raval quarter and raised over a former mosque, adds another church to the historic centre. The old town keeps its district-capital air, with local life around the palace, and the Penella castle, in its rural district, stretches the visit out to the fields. The whole ensemble is walked in a morning, with the castle as the final viewpoint. Cocentaina sits about 81 km from Valencia toward the Alicante interior.
