Montcabrer
Roof of the Mariola range at 1390 m, third in Alicante, through holm-oak and scrub with views over three districts.
Montcabrer is the highest summit of the Mariola range, in the municipality of Cocentaina, at 1390 m of altitude. It belongs to the Baetic Systems and is the third highest peak in the province of Alicante. The climb runs on foot through holm-oak and aromatic scrub, with views opening over three districts. You arrive by car from València in about 85 minutes; neighbouring Ontinyent lies in the Vall d'Albaida, on the far side of the range. A typical visit lasts about 5 hours.
The climb
This is a high-difficulty route, with sustained climbing and stretches of track and footpath. The classic line starts around Cocentaina and climbs through holm-oaks to the summit. The low scrub leaves open views for much of the ascent, which helps pace the effort.
Visit notices
The best season runs from autumn to spring: avoid summer for the heat and the lack of shade on the upper stretches. Carry more water than planned, mountain shoes and the route track, as there are track junctions. There are no services at the top: plan the descent in daylight and tell someone your route.
