Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes (Senda de los Pantaneros)
A spectacular trail through the Turia river gorge along the old Pantaneros water-keepers' path, crossing walkways and swaying suspension bridges above the canyon toward the Loriguilla reservoir. Easy and well-marked, with sheer rock walls, the Charco Azul pool and shady corners perfect for a summer dip.
Ten kilometres of linear trail through the Hoces del Turia, with around 300 m of climbing over short rises. The old Senda de los Pantaneros follows the river along the canyon floor and crosses two suspension bridges of wood and cable. Rated easy; 3–4 hours out and back.
The route
It starts in Chulilla and drops to the riverbed along the path the dam workers, the pantaneros, cut in the early 20th century. It runs tight to the water, through narrows where the walls almost meet overhead, as far as the two hanging bridges. Head back the same way, or carry on to the Loriguilla reservoir.
What to see
The Charco Azul is the headline stop: a green-blue pool for a summer swim. You'll spot vultures riding the air above the canyon. On the way back, climb to the castle and old centre of Chulilla.
Tips
- Wear walking shoes: there is smooth rock and there are steps.
- Carry plenty of water; in summer avoid the middle of the day.
- Avoid days of heavy rain because of the risk in the riverbed.
