Anselm Kiefer at the Hortensia Herrero Art Centre
The Hortensia Herrero Art Centre hosts the first exhibition of Anselm Kiefer's work in València, featuring a 13-metre painting. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the artist and will run until October 2026.
The show runs until 30 October 2026, so there is time, but it is the first Anselm Kiefer exhibition at the Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero and it was made in collaboration with the artist himself. That sets it apart from a packaged touring show moving city to city. It was built for these rooms.
What you will see
The centrepiece is a thirteen-metre painting brought over from New York, and the scale shapes how you look at it: this is work you have to step back from, not lean into. Kiefer is among the most recognised German post-war artists and works with material and texture as much as with paint. Which other pieces accompany it, and how the show is laid out across the floors, is on the centre's official page. Tickets are bought through its website and are worth sorting before you turn up, since timed entry is normal at galleries of this size.
Where it is
The Hortensia Herrero Art Centre occupies a restored palace at Carrer del Mar 31, inside the old town. The building is part of the visit: archaeological remains uncovered during the restoration were left in place and integrated into the route. You walk here from anywhere in the historic centre, and there is no comfortable way to arrive by car, so do not try.
What to combine it with
This is the densest patch of heritage in the city. Two minutes away is the Real Iglesia de San Juan del Hospital, the oldest church in València, and a little further the church of Santa Catalina and the Plaza Redonda, a circular market square. Note that many smaller churches close through the middle of the day. To plan the walk, see the best museums in València and the guide to the Carmen quarter on the other side of the old town.
