The Hogueras de San Juan (Fogueres de Sant Joan) are Alicante's great fire festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, filling the city centre with ephemeral art, tradition and gunpowder. The main days run from 20 to 24 June 2026, though cultural and festive events extend until the end of the month, according to the official programme of Alicante City Council and the Federació de Les Fogueres de Sant Joan. After the plantà (the raising of the hogueras, monumental cardboard-and-wood sculptures set up across neighbourhoods and squares), the deafening mascletà fires every midday in Plaza de los Luceros, while at nightfall firework displays light up Playa del Postiguet. The festival climaxes on the night of 24 June with the cremà, when all the hogueras are set ablaze after the spectacular Palmera is launched from Mount Benacantil (Santa Bárbara Castle). Parades, street stalls (barracas), traditional dress and the festival queens (bellezas del fuego) round out a celebration that is lived by day and felt by night. The street events are free to attend; the full detailed programme is available on the official website and the FoguerApp.
