La Nit de Sant Joan (Saint John's Night) is the popular celebration with which València welcomes summer on the night of 23-24 June on its beaches, above all the Malva-rosa and the Cabanyal, along the Paseo Marítimo between the Hotel Las Arenas and the Blasco Ibáñez House-Museum. València City Council (Ajuntament de València) runs a special operation and hands out free firewood from the city's tree pruning at several points along the promenade (distribution usually begins in the late afternoon, around 18:00-19:30), so the public can light their own bonfires within marked perimeters. At midnight come the most magical rituals: lighting the bonfires and jumping over the waves and the flames to attract good luck and purify oneself for the new cycle. The festivities are rounded off by more than 200 street parties (verbenas) organised by the falla commissions across the neighbourhoods, with music, dancing and a festive atmosphere until dawn. It is a free, open-air event; the City Council reinforces cleaning, security and public transport (EMT buses and Metrovalencia extend their services through the night), and the beaches are left clean by early morning on 24 June. The tradition grew in popularity after the 750th anniversary of the city's conquest and the building of the Paseo Marítimo.
