Montanejos, Salto de la Novia and Cheese Fair guide
In short: Montanejos is about 68 km from Valencia, in Alto Mijares. The visit centres on the Fuente de los Banos and the River Mijares. The 11th Artisan Cheese Fair ran from 2 to 4 October 2026 at Plaza Espana and Calle Manuel Pradas, with free entry to the fair. As an add-on, the Salto de la Novia at Navajas is a waterfall of about 60 metres on an easy circular walk of 6 km and about 2 hours. Access, capacity and rules change with the season, so check the linked official pages before you go.
This guide brings together three names that many people search for together: Montanejos, the Salto de la Novia at Navajas and the Cheese Fair. On a map they fit as one inland trip from Valencia into Castellon. In one day, the fit is tighter. Montanejos asks for a morning by the river. Navajas asks for another, with closed shoes. The fair, when it is on, works best as the main plan.
Here is what I could check on pages opened for this guide, and what I leave out because it changes. You will find no set water temperature, no fixed price list and no bus timetable. When access depends on the season, I link the official page so you can check the day before.
Montanejos in short: village, river and Fuente de los Banos
Our page for Montanejos places it about 68 km from Valencia, in Alto Mijares, with 649 residents in the Mijares valley. The centre is small and easy on foot: the parish church of Santiago Apostol, the chapel of the Virgen de los Desamparados and the remains of the Alqueria castle, with walls and a protected tower. The San Jose bridge crosses the river by the riverside walk.
The same page sums it up in one line: its natural draw is the Fuente de los Banos, on the river. I would start there. Arrive early, park without blocking gates, walk down to the river and then decide whether you swim or keep walking. I give no set water temperature and no health claim, because I found none on a current official page I could check. The official Montanejos tourism page has its own section on the Fuente de los Banos, with information and tickets. Check access, rules and capacity there before you go.
With children, pack a towel, shoes that grip and can get wet, a bag for wet clothes and drinking water. Wet rock is slippery with smooth soles. Put the phone away and watch your footing.
What else to see if you go for more than a swim
The Barranco de la Maimona is listed as a limestone gorge by Montanejos, with climbing walls, pine woods and the waymarked Senda de la Bojera loop, about 500 metres from the town hall. The Estrechos de Chillapajaros is listed as an 8 km loop along the narrows of the Mijares, with viewpoints and the Cueva Negra, about 1.7 km from the town hall. I give no fixed time for either walk. Open each page and judge heat, start time and fitness with care.
To compare other inland water plans, use our guide to natural pools near Valencia and our guide to natural parks near Valencia. In summer, an extra hour in the car on the way home weighs more than it does on the way out.
The Artisan Cheese Fair: dates I checked
The live event page presents the fair with more than twenty cheese makers, a cheese contest, tastings, workshops, showcookings and live music in Alto Mijares, with free entry to the fair. That edition ran from Friday 2 October 2026 to Sunday 4 October, at Plaza Espana and Calle Manuel Pradas. The official fair website, on its 2026 programme page, says you can see all the activities prepared for 2, 3 and 4 October.
The official programme lists the fair site opening on the Saturday at 10:00, with stalls at Plaza Espana and Calle Manuel Pradas, and the jury contest tasting for Valencian cheeses on the same day. The fair has a market side for walking and tasting, and a contest side with a jury. If a tasting needs booking, the programme will say so. Places for small sessions go first, so read that line before you travel.
I will not turn the 2026 date into a promise for 2027. Yearly editions change. For the year you need, check the official fair website and, for plans on those days, our today agenda. The village is small and the fair sits in a few streets, so arrive with time and avoid circling the centre by car.
Salto de la Novia at Navajas as an add-on
The Salto de la Novia is at Navajas, in Alt Palancia. Our Salto de la Novia route page describes a waterfall of about 60 metres on the River Palancia, on the Route of the Fountains. The circular route is listed at 6 km, about 2 hours and 150 metres of climbing, mostly flat, through poplar groves and pools, over track, footpath and steps by the springs. It also names the Fuente de los Cloticos.
The page advises closed shoes with grip, because rock by the water is slippery, and drinking water even though you pass springs, since springs on the way may lack safe drinking quality. On timing, it says March to June brings the most flow over the falls, and summer calls for an early start. I promise no set flow on your day. After dry weeks, the river changes.
Can you do Montanejos and Navajas in one day? You can drive it, and I would still split them on a first visit, in swimming season or on fair days. To plan the wider trip, use day trips from Valencia and hiking routes near Valencia.
Getting there without invented lines or times
I found no current official source that lets me state a set bus line, a frequency or a fixed journey time, so I invent none. Most visitors use a car between villages in Alto Mijares and Alt Palancia, and even then I give no driving time as a promise.
If you travel without a car, start with our guide to reaching villages without a car and check your exact trip and last ride home on official operator sites the day before. Let the ride home shape the plan. On site, local signs win over any guide. If access is controlled or swimming is banned that day, follow the sign.
Crowds and care for the river
In summer and on fair weekends, arrive early. At the Fuente de los Banos and at the Salto de la Novia, the middle of the day draws nearly everyone at once. With children, set the rule before you arrive: no running on wet rock, and no swimming where the rules are unclear. Leave no cigarette ends, wipes or food scraps on the bank. The Mijares and the Palancia have neighbours all year round. A Sunday visitor is a guest.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Fuente de los Banos at Montanejos?
It is the spring and river area at the centre of a visit to Montanejos, on the Mijares. Access, rules and capacity change with the season, so check the official Montanejos tourism page before you go.
When was the Montanejos Cheese Fair in this guide?
The 11th Artisan Cheese Fair, from 2 to 4 October 2026, at Plaza Espana and Calle Manuel Pradas, with free entry to the fair. For later editions, check the official fair website.
How long does the Salto de la Novia walk take?
About 2 hours for the full circular loop of 6 km, with 150 metres of climbing. With children or in heat, allow more time and carry water.
Can I do Montanejos and Salto de la Novia in one day?
You can, and I would still split them on a first visit, in swimming season or if the fair is on. Each place asks for its own morning.
Can I always swim at both places?
Do not assume so. Allowed swimming and controlled access depend on the season, the river flow and local rules. If the position is unclear, stay out of the water.
How do I get there without a car from Valencia?
I give no set line or time here because I could check none on a current official source. Check your exact trip and last ride home on official operator sites the day before.
