Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is the parish church of Alboraya, a solid mass that presides over the Plaza de la Constitución in the old town. Medieval in origin but markedly Baroque in appearance, its volume dominates the surrounding houses and sets the rhythm of village life, amid the chufa (tiger-nut) fields and market gardens of L'Horta Nord. Entry is free, and it rewards a pause on any stroll through the historic centre.

History

The church has its roots in the medieval period, when the first parishes of the Valencian huerta were founded. Like many churches in the region, it grew and changed over the centuries until it took on the Baroque look seen today, a common path for the large parish churches around Valencia.

• The facade and exterior mass that command the Plaza de la Constitución.
• The three-nave interior, broad and light-filled.
• The main altar in Alicante marble, with the altarpiece dedicated to the town's patron.

Tips for your visit

Respect the hours of worship and stay quiet if mass is being held. Take the chance to wander the old town and, on the way, drop by the Ermita dels Peixets or head to Port Saplaya, the small Mediterranean "Venice".
