Castell d'Almenara
A castle built by the Arabs over an Iberian settlement, on the hill that overlooks the town. It was active in the Middle Ages and served as a residence for James I and Violante of Hungary; today it lies in ruins, but it preserves remains of three lines of wall and two towers, l'Agüelet and l'Agüeleta.
The Castell d'Almenara was built by the Arabs over the remains of an Iberian settlement, on the hill that dominates the town. During the Middle Ages it was in use and became a residence of James I of Aragon and his wife Violante of Hungary. Today it lies in ruins, but it preserves remains of three lines of wall and of two towers, known as l'Agüelet and l'Agüeleta. The site reveals the stepped layout of a fortress that reused an earlier settlement and kept its military role over several centuries.
