On the hill above Montesa, the castle-convent was the headquarters of the military Order of Montesa from 1319. The 1748 earthquake ruined it, and in 1926 it was listed as a national monument.

History

Jaume II founded the Order of Montesa in 1319 and gave it this castle as headquarters and convent. The Order guarded inland Valencia for centuries until the 1748 earthquake brought the complex down, leaving monumental ruins.

What to see

The castle-convent ruins, with the restored chapter hall, and the valley views. Below stand the church of the Asunción (1693-1702, with a 1744 organ) and the Santa Cruz hermitage.
