The Cartuja de Ara Christi (Ara Christi Charterhouse) is a former Carthusian monastery built from the 16th century onwards and today declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). It preserves the air of withdrawal and silence that defined the life of the Carthusian monks, one of the most austere contemplative orders. Isolated among the market gardens of El Puig, its Baroque church is crowned by a blue dome that stands out against the flat landscape of L'Horta Nord.
History
The charterhouse was founded as a house of the Carthusian Order, so the monks could live there in enclosure and prayer. Over the centuries it went through the same ups and downs as Valencia's other great monasteries, and today it is partially restored.
