Ermita del Calvario (de Jesús Nazareno)

On a small wooded knoll at the entrance to Xàbia, beside the road arriving from Dénia, stands this elegant neoclassical hermitage. Its silhouette, crowned by an octagonal dome clad in blue glazed tiles that gleam against the Mediterranean sky, has become one of the most recognisable sights on the approach to town.

History

Built in 1770 and rebuilt in 1856, the hermitage reflects the neoclassical taste that shaped Valencian religious architecture of those years: sober lines, balanced proportion and a preference for clarity over heavy ornament. It houses the venerated image of Jesus the Nazarene, the focus of local devotion.

What to see

The building is laid out on a Greek-cross plan and culminates in its distinctive octagonal blue-tiled dome. The interior, intimate and full of light, is covered by barrel vaults that reinforce that sense of simplicity and serenity. A Way of the Cross runs around the grounds, inviting a short, contemplative stroll.
