Ermita del Santo Cristo

The Ermita del Santo Cristo crowns a steep hillside on the edge of the old town of Bocairent, very close to the famous Covetes dels Moros, the caves carved into the cliff. Gothic in style, it forms part of the ring of outlying chapels arranged in a cross around the town, and it rewards the climb with sweeping panoramic views over Bocairent and its rocky surroundings.

History

The chapel follows the Valencian Gothic tradition typical of this area, with a sober, sturdy structure adapted to the steep terrain. Its elevated position, on the hillside beside the caves, makes it part of the characteristic ring of small shrines that have long encircled the heart of Bocairent and shape the surrounding landscape.

What to see

The real draw is the whole ensemble: the building perched on high, the Covetes dels Moros at its feet, and the horizon of mountains and rock that opens out from the top. The architecture is austere, true to the language of the region's rural chapels.

• The climb is steep: wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in summer.
• Combine it with the Covetes dels Moros, which sit right beside it.
• At sunset the light over the town and the rock is especially lovely.
• Allow time to wander Bocairent's medieval quarter on the way down.
