What to see in Bocairent
Bocairent is, for many, the prettiest village in the province of València. Perched in the Sierra de Mariola, its medieval centre of steep streets, staircases and houses carved into the rock keeps an Arab-era layout you wander like a maze. It's further out than other day trips, but it earns every kilometre.
What to see
The great mystery is Les Covetes dels Moros, a cluster of 53 windows carved into a cliff face, with chambers and passageways that probably served as granaries or silos in the 10th-11th centuries. Another oddity is the bullring, opened in 1843 and cut entirely from stone: the oldest in the Valencian Community. Don't miss the Medieval Quarter, the church of Santa Maria and the Cava de Sant Blai, an old snow well where ice used to be stored. The easiest way to see it all is the Magic Route, a signposted circuit of about 2.5 km and low difficulty starting from the Town Hall square.
Getting there from València
By car it's about 95 km, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes via the A-7 and CV-81. Public transport is awkward, so a car is worth it.
Local tip
Two dates are worth planning around: during Holy Week Bocairent stages a nighttime Via Crucis, and in February it holds its Moors and Christians festival. How do you get to Bocairent from València?
The handiest way is by car on the A-7 and the Ontinyent turn-off: around an hour to an hour and 15 minutes for roughly 95 km. Without a car, take the intercity bus to Bocairent (only a few runs a day), or combine a regional train or bus to Ontinyent and then the local bus or a taxi for the last few kilometres.
Does Bocairent have a train station?
No. The closest station is Ontinyent, about 11 km away, on Renfe's regional València-Xàtiva-Ontinyent-Alcoi line. The Xàtiva-Alcoi section is under works with a replacement bus, so check timetables before travelling.
What is there to see in Bocairent?
The steep-laned medieval quarter, the church of Santa María, the Covetes dels Moros cut into the rock, and the rock-cut monastery beneath the Augustinian convent. Also worth a look: the bullring carved into the mountainside, hermitages such as Sant Joan and the Santo Cristo, and the Vicent Casanova Archaeological Museum.
Is Bocairent worth a day trip with kids?
Yes. It's a small, easy-to-walk town, with caves and passageways that keep kids interested and the Sierra de Mariola right next door for walks. Good for a morning or a relaxed day; wear comfortable shoes, there are a lot of slopes.
