Guadalest — Marina Baixa (Alacant)

An 18th-century Baroque parish church, rebuilt after the Civil War: plain and bright, at the top of the village. The bell tower, split from the church by the rock itself, is the image people associate with Guadalest; entry is free.

At the very top of Guadalest, crowning the cluster of houses that clings to the rock, stands the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. It is a parish church with a Baroque feel, plain and bright, and the climb up to it already opens onto views over the valley.

History

The building follows the Baroque taste of the 18th century, when many parishes in the area were renewed. Damage during the Civil War meant it had to be rebuilt, so what we see today combines the historic layout with that later, more sober reconstruction. The interior is open and clear, with little ornament, in keeping with the humble character of this mountain village.

What to see

The great curiosity is the bell tower, separated from the body of the church by the very rock on which the village sits. This freestanding tower is the image most associated with Guadalest, and it appears in almost every panorama of the town.

Tips for your visit

Frequently asked questions

Is there an entry fee for the Church of the Assumption?

No, entry to the parish church is free. It sits at the top of the village and rewards the climb with one of the most photographed scenes in the Marina Baixa.

What is special about the church's bell tower?

Its great curiosity is that the bell tower is separated from the church by the rock, and it has become one of Guadalest's most recognisable symbols.

Why was the church rebuilt?

The church has an 18th-century Baroque style, but it was damaged during the Civil War and rebuilt, so what you see today blends its historic layout with the plain reconstruction that followed.
