MACA — Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Alacant
Contemporary-art museum beside the Santa María basilica, built around the Casa de la Asegurada (1685), the city's oldest public building and a sober example of Alicante Baroque. The Casa de la Asegurada, dated 1685, is the oldest public building Alicante still keeps and a sober example of local Baroque. Since 1977 it has held the MACA, the contemporary-art museum of Alacant, right beside the Santa María basilica.
How the collection began
It all started with a 1977 gift from Alicante artist Eusebio Sempere, who handed his home city a set of 20th-century art. The signatures include Miró, Picasso, Dalí and Chillida, alongside work by Sempere himself, a master of op-art.
