At the edge of the historic centre of Elche stands the Calahorra Tower, an Almohad tower from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is one of the oldest structures still standing in town.

History

The tower belonged to the Islamic defences of the town and survived the Christian conquest and later urban renewal. Its rubble-masonry fabric shows Almohad military construction.

What to see

The free-standing tower, square in plan with thick walls, against the modern houses around it. It is a short stop explaining the Islamic past of Elche. It pairs well with the Muslim wall remains at the nearby Altamira Palace.
