Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa Catalina
Gothic-Baroque parish from the 13th century over the former main mosque, with a 1692 Baroque portal by Gaspar Díez.
In the heart of La Vila in Alcira, the church of Santa Catalina is the historic parish of the town. It went up in the 13th century over the former main mosque and added Gothic and Baroque work over the centuries.
History
After the Christian conquest, the Muslim main temple became a church devoted to Santa Catalina. The Gothic fabric grew through the Middle Ages, and in 1692 it gained the Baroque portal by Gaspar Díez, its clearest outer mark.
What to see
The 1692 Baroque portal, with its stone altarpiece front, and the Gothic nave interior with side chapels. The bell tower marks the centre of La Vila. Two steps away are the Casa Consistorial and the wall sections.
Tips for your visit
- Face the portal from the square to read its tiers.
- Step inside if open: the Gothic-Baroque contrast is indoors.
