What to see in Chelva
Chelva, about 62 km from València, is the historic capital of La Serranía by the Turia, with about 1,500 residents and a municipality over 190 sq km. Three quarters keep their plan: Arab Benacacira, Jewish Azoque and Morisco Arrabal.
The historic quarters are walked with the 14th-century San Francisco convent. The 17th-century Ángeles church is an early example of Valencian Baroque. The Vizcondal palace was raised from the 13th century over the Muslim castle, and La Torrecilla is the last standing Almohad tower. Chelva is the main stage of the Ruta del Agua, among springs, wash-houses and Peña Cortada.
The Ruta del Agua links springs, wash-houses and the Peña Cortada aqueduct: it needs a half day apart from the town, with walking boots and water.
Local tip
Quarters and church in the morning, La Torrecilla after lunch. The Ruta del Agua needs another separate half day, in walking boots.
